Women’s Day Special: How to Listen to Your Body and Stay Fit and Healthy Longer
Every year, on 8 March, the global community comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day—an occasion aimed at highlighting the various achievements of women and calls for action to accelerate women’s equality.
Modern day women face real challenges on a daily basis, including having to juggle professional and personal lives, caring for family, building a home, maintaining relationships with friends, carving out hard-earned support systems … all while navigating challenging socio-cultural and even economic conditions.
Women—generations of grandmothers, mothers and daughters—have weathered through all odds and displayed immense grit and tenacity. In modern present day, with the amount of mental load on their shoulders mounting on, stress and self-neglect due to lack of time or energy have become problems more common than ever.
This International Women’s Day, why not give yourself a time-out and check in with your body and mind? Here are some simple but often overlooked tips for making positive changes for better health. Only when you take care of yourself, can you take care of the ones you love!
Tip #1: Manage Your Stress
Stress is not uncommon in modern day life, and it can have its positive benefits. However, too much stress can have long-term ill effects on one’s physical and mental health.
Symptoms of stress differ from woman to woman but some common ones include headaches, difficulty sleeping, tiredness, pain in the back and neck, and overeating or under eating.
If you notice yourself feeling more stressed than usual, you can manage it by doing simple breathing exercises or meditation. Journaling and/or talking to a closed one about your stress can also help take things off your mind.
Tip #2: Prioritise Sleep
Sleep is one of the best health boosters and is easy to achieve if you have the right conditions. While it’s perfectly normal to have the occasional bad night, frequent insomnia can start to take its toll on your body and health.
Use a sleep-tracking app to track your sleep cycle. Have a sleep routine and stick to it. The more you integrate your sleep routine into your daily schedule, the more your body will begin to associate these habits with bedtime.
Another disruption to one’s sleep cycle is light, so invest in blackout curtains or a sleeping mask, silent your phone and turn off the television before bed!
Tip #3: Take Care of Your Appearance
Taking the time to care for your appearance can seem frivolous when you have so much on your plate. Yet, taking the time every day to look in the mirror and make sure you look good will help you feel good about yourself. When you’re happy, you have more to give to the people you love. Go the extra mile once in a while, and treat yourself to a spa or facial treatment. There’s a reason why self-love and self-care are such important buzzwords these days. Looking after your own appearance is one of the ways you can achieve that, and it can be surprisingly therapeutic.
Some common hair problems that plague modern women are hair loss, balding and thinning hair line, which can impact one’s image and confidence greatly. Although these are traditionally male-skewed problems, because a higher percentage of men are genetically predisposed to hair loss, women are not immune to it.
A range of factors is linked to hair loss: hormonal fluctuations resulting in seasonal hair loss throughout periods of one’s life, postpartum hair loss, or temporary hair loss caused by stress and other lifestyle factors.
Traditionally, many hair products and treatments for hair loss and balding are targeted at or formulated for men. At PHS HAIRSCIENCE, we created hair solutions specifically addressing women’s hair loss problems and needs as well. To date, the FEM Fortify and FEM Thickening series have become must-have products for women who want real solutions to their hair woes.
