4 Common Causes of Scalp Tenderness & Sensitivity, and How You Can Treat It

Sensitive skin is a common issue, and conditions that affect the skin can also present on the scalp.

Known as scalp tenderness or sensitivity, this condition affects people with different symptoms. There are also varying degrees of severity. One of the most common symptoms is itching of the scalp and can be a cause of major frustration.

As with sensitive skin on the body, an itchy scalp is usually a sign that your scalp is lacking moisture and/or irritated by a particular ingredient in a product. Also, look out for other symptoms like inflammation, redness, pain, or drying and flaking of the scalp.

So, what exactly causes scalp sensitivity? We break it down for you and offer tips on how to wave goodbye to your sensitive scalp below!

    Excessive Heat

Too much heat exposure is one of the most prevalent causes of sensitive scalp.

Our scalps are constantly exposed to a variety of heat sources. These include the sun, styling tools such as hair dryers and flat irons, and even hot showers.

    Harsh Chemicals

Many haircare products in the market are loaded with harsh chemicals that can easily irritate an already-sensitive scalp. Sulphates, parabens and synthetic fragrances are a big no-no when it comes to treating scalp sensitivity.

In addition, if you are an avid swimmer, chances are you may also experience some form of scalp sensitivity. It is due to the presence of chemicals like chlorine in the pool water. Even natural saltwater at the beach can dry out your scalp and cause irritation!

    Product Build-Up

A build-up of residue from continual usage of products like dry shampoo and leave-in conditioner can lead to clogged hair follicles, itchiness, and excess oil production.

Just like the rest of the skin, our scalps require the right balance of washing. This avoid the clogging of pores and remove dead skin without over-washing.  Over washing may cause dryness.

When conditioning our hair, focus primarily on the ends of the hair rather than roots to avoid product build-up in the shower. Brushing or rubbing of hair while it is wet can also lead to the breakage of hair follicles, resulting in hair loss and scalp irritation.

    Skin Conditions

A variety of skin conditions can cause scalp sensitivity. Symptoms such as pain, itching, and inflammation. Folliculitis and Psoriasis are two of the most common.

Folliculitis is the infection of hair follicles and manifests as small, pimple-like bumps on the scalp. Psoriasis makes the skin dry with a silvery sheen. It is accompanied by flaking on the outermost layer of the scalp. Both conditions require medical intervention to be relieved.
