Scalp Care Tips for Men and Women

scalp care tips

Healthy hair is a sign of physical and mental well-being. Stress, lack of care, poor nutrition, styling and other bad hair practices cause the scalp to suffer long-term damage. A dry and flaky scalp can render the hair dull and cause severe hair fall. On the other hand, excessive secretion of sebum in the scalp may lead to greasy hair and requires proper hair loss treatment. Here are 7 scalp care tips that men and women should follow.

1. Brush the hair everyday

This is to be done before washing your hair. Gentle brushing helps remove dead skin clogging the follicles of your hair. Another benefit of brushing is that it is good for blood circulation in the scalp. Brushing is also necessary to get the oil down to the length of the hair shaft, so as to moisturize the ends. Avoid using plastic bristle brushes.

2. Shampoo once in every three days

Washing your hair everyday can strip the scalp of its natural oils. Waiting for 4-5 days before washing will lead to build up of hair products, dead skin cells and oil. This can lead to inflammation and even require scalp treatment in the long term. If you have extra-greasy roots and need to shampoo every day, use a mild cleanser like the ADV Purifying Cleanser.

3. Condition regularly

For drier scalps, conditioning is essential. This is because conditioning helps to retain the moisture of the hair. Massage the conditioner onto the scalp well. Use conditioners that contain healthy ingredients like tomato and other fruit extracts, like the ADV Nutrition Hair Conditioner from PHS Hairscience.

4. Massage using essential oils twice every week

Essential oils are essential for hair loss treatment. Different oils have different qualities and they all help to stimulate circulation. Dilute tea tree oil in a vegetable oil, and massage it into your hair every second or third night. Wash it off in the morning. If you have dandruff due to fungi, you can use lavender and tea tree oils.

5. Use a clarifying shampoo once every month

Applying gels and styling sprays and creams will eventually lead to a buildup of these products. The consequences include irritation and itching and even autoimmune disorders leading to a greasy scalp. Clarifying shampoos containing citric acid help remove this residue. You could also add apple cider vinegar to a regular shampoo. Wait for 2-3 minutes before rinsing.

6. Exfoliate on a weekly basis

Exfoliation is as important for the scalp as it is for the skin. This is important to wash off the dead skin cells and impurities that have built up on the scalp like the ADV Pre-Treatment Scalp Elixir that also helps to unclog follicles, preventing hair thinning.

7. Undergo scalp treatment for flakes

It is a mistake to believe you will never have flakes. They are a natural result of stress, lack of rest, dry and undernourished skin. Inflammation can cause itching and scratching can aggravate dandruff. Seek scalp treatment and/or hair loss treatment if you experience hair fall. Use an anti-dandruff serum to follow up with your regular hair care regime.
