How to Protect Your Hair from Hard Water

protect hair from hard water

Hard water has been known to be a trigger for a number of hair problems, particularly eczema. It also uses up more shampoo and makes rinsing difficult. The hair becomes dry and prone to breakage after continuous washes. Gradually, the dissolved minerals get deposited on the scalp, restricting any moisture from entering. Eventually, you will have to go for hair loss treatment. But don’t worry! There are ways to protect your hair from hard water. Here are some useful tips.

Using water softeners

Water softeners can be effective, but expensive. They can help remove calcium and magnesium, and other metal cations from the water. Eczema can be controlled by using water softeners. However, if you are experiencing an oily scalp, but haven’t developed eczema yet, you should seek oily scalp treatment. A more affordable solution would be using shower filters.

Using the right conditioner and shampoo

If you live in an area that routinely receives hard water, you will have to use special shampoos for hard water. Chelating or clarifying shampoos are designed to inhibit the build-up of minerals in your hair, but they can be harsh. Use a moisturizing conditioner or one that works on the scalp and repairs hair damage. The ADV Argan Oil Conditioner includes argan oil and citric acid, a key nutrient to compensate for the hardness of water.

Adding alum to water

Alum helps dissolved impurities and minerals to settle at the bottom of the container. Set aside a bucket of water with water you will use to rinse your hair. Add a spoonful of alum to the bucket. Use water from the surface to rinse your hair after a wash.

Rinsing with vinegar

Vinegar is known to remove minerals from hard water. Take three cups of water and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Shampoo your hair and rinse it using this vinegar solution. Vinegar also imparts shine and bounce to your hair. You can also use apple cider vinegar. However, do make sure that the pH of your apple cider vinegar is above 4.5.

Rinsing with lime juice

Lime juice works much like vinegar, because both are acidic. It breaks down minerals and residual salts in your hair. If your hair tends to get greasy easily, lemon is better choice than vinegar because of its tendency to remove excess oil.

Rinsing with bottled water

Bottled water provides a temporary solution. For a long-term solution, you should seek oily scalp treatment. However, if you’re visiting a specific hard water area for a couple of days, you can consider rinsing your hair with mineral water for some days. However, it is ineffective for a longer period of time and is not environment friendly.

Revitalize dull hair with the right hair products

Hard water can leave your hair reeling from lack of moisture, including dandruff and damaged hair. The ADV Argan Oil is enriched with natural vitamin E and repairs dry and damaged hairCleansers help to remove mineral build-up. Scalp tonics work to provide nutrition to the undernourished scalp. The ADV Nutrition Scalp Tonic contains salicylic acid, castor oil and ginseng root extracts to fight dullness. However, in case of severe hair fall, consult a trichologist and seek proper hair loss treatment at PHS Hairscience.
