DIY Treatments to Eliminate Dandruff

Dandruff can be embarrassing. It itches which makes one scratch their head all the time, and the flakes on one’s shoulder and hair gives off a negative impression. Not only does it make one look shabby, but also creates more serious problems including hair loss and ultimately, balding. If you too, suffer from dandruff, here are a few do-it-yourself treatments to help you in your battle against it.

How to prevent dandruff

Dandruff is an aggravated form of an extra oily scalp. Caused by the presence of the Malazzesia fungus, which grows in dampness and oiliness, dandruff should be ideally treated by controlling the production of sebum. Hair products is particularly important to control dandruff. Haircare products catered for dandruff conditions such as the PHS Hairscience Purifying range which includes shampoos and tonics. Now let’s take a look at natural treatment options for dandruff.

Oil massage

Massaging your scalp lightly with coconut oil is said to treat dandruff. Massage your hair lightly with coconut oil, letting it sit in the hair for one hour then shampoo and rinse off. Massage your hair with 8-10 drops of olive oil and let it remain overnight. Again, shampoo normally.

Baking soda

Baking soda is an effective DIY scalp treatment ingredient easily available in most kitchens. It is basic in nature, and helps to kill fungi responsible for dandruff. It is a brilliant way to scrub and exfoliate your hair. Simply rub a little baking soda into your wet hair. However, do not shampoo afterwards. Simply rinse. People often notice dryness after the baking soda treatment, but that lasts for only a few weeks. They should see improvement as soon as their hair starts producing natural oils.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is considered a divine remedy for dandruff and hair loss problems. Cut along the length of an aloe leaf, and squeeze out the pulp. Apply this pulp onto your hair and ease the itching. Aloe vera is said to help treat the side-effects of dandruff, such as, inflammation, dryness and even hair fall.

Acid-based treatment

Apple cider vinegar is another popular remedy for dandruff. It helps stabilize the pH of the scalp, thereby inhibiting the growth of yeast. Mix equal parts with water and briefly spray on your hair. Cover the hair with a towel and wash in another 15 minutes. If you fancy the acid-based scalp treatment, you can also go for lemons. Massage the juice of 1-2 lemons into your hair and wait for 15 minutes before rinsing.
