Why Mineral Oil is Bad for Hair

Mineral oil has been used for decades to treat a number of scalp and skin ailments. It is often claimed that mineral oil can rid the skin of dryness and help alleviate dandruff. However, experts state that mineral oil can actually clog the pores.

Recently, it has been proven that untreated mineral oil can actually be carcinogenic, leading to the potential of causing cancer. It is better to go for a proper scalp treatment if you have dandruff.

The manufacture and composition of mineral oils

Mineral oil is commonly used in lotions, cosmetics, and ointments. Untreated, “technical” grade mineral oil is known to contain human carcinogens. However, studies conducted on even “cosmetic” grade mineral oil reveal that hydrocarbons found in it contaminate the human body. This has been proven by milk and fat samples collected from women.

Products containing mineral oils constitute 30% of aromatic components. A considerable portion of this is alkylated, which adds to the health risk.

If you are looking forward to treat your dandruff with mineral oil based products, it will be better to get an anti-dandruff shampoo. The ADV Purifying Cleanser is among the best anti-dandruff shampoos today. It contains botanical extracts and does not have mineral oil.

Mineral oil Vs coconut oil

Coconut oil penetrates deeper into the hair shaft, moisturizing from within. However, mineral oil stays at the surface. Therefore, coconut oil softens the hair which makes hair flexible and strong and also helps to retain keratin molecules, reducing protein erosion.

Mineral oil on the other hand acts merely as a cheap lubricant. It does not benefit the hair or the scalp in any way neither does it infuse the scalp with nutrients nor hydrate it. Mineral oil is merely sitting on your scalp to preventing the scalp from moisture. While coconut oil has medical properties, mineral oil can cause rashes in some people.

The harms outweigh the benefits

Some people uses mineral oil for treating constipation or to alleviate dry skin. However, most of the time, the oil ends up clogging the pores. For the skin, this means an increased risk of blackheads and acne. On the scalp, this clogging can give rise to frizz and oily dandruff. Experts express doubts over even pharmaceutical grade mineral oil.

Mineral oil can cause damages to the hair follicles as well and this is where the hair cycle takes place. Irritation to the follicles can disrupt healthy hair growth. If you suffer from dry scalp, it is better to go for professional scalp treatments certified by trichologists with PHS Hairscience.
