6 Haircare Myths & Facts About Female Hair Loss

#1 Myth: The scalp ages faster than skin, and there’s nothing you can do about age-related hair loss.

Fact: Not quite true. While it’s undeniable that biological ageing is inevitable, you can take steps to ensure that it happens gracefully. For instance, someone who takes active steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating nutritiously and practising mindfulness has better odds of keeping illnesses and age-related degeneration at bay, longer. Similarly, while it’s true that nearly everyone will experience some hair loss with age, you can prevent a premature onset and minimise the effects with conscious, proper scalp care.

Treatment: The delicate scalp skin ages a whopping 12 times faster than the skin on our body, and six times faster than facial skin. Scalp skin can lose elasticity and firmness, become thinner, and have fewer active hair follicles over time. The rate of hair growth also slows by as much as 80%, from 1.25cm on a healthy scalp to less than 0.25cm over time. Armed with this knowledge, you can take steps to minimise the effects of an ageing scalp.

If you are in your 20s, start thinking about a proper scalp care regime that optimises scalp functions and improves hair health – check out the ADV Nutrition regime if you’re not sure where to start. Prevention is always better than cure, because once the scalp deteriorates, it’s incredibly hard to restore it to a perfectly healthy state.

In your 30s, particularly if you subject your hair to frequent chemical treatments, you may start to experience some temporary bouts of hair loss or scalp disorders. This is a good time to incorporate regular, professional scalp treatments into your scalp care regime. The H2 Advance Scalp Repair Treatment, for instance, takes care of common scalp disorders like dandruff, oily scalp, or sensitive scalp.

In your 40s and beyond, actively introduce anti-ageing products like the AGE Defy range into your repertoire to help delay and combat signs of scalp ageing, such as brittle or thinning hair. If you find that your hair seems to be growing much slower than before, consider a treatment like MIRACLE STEM CELL SOLUTION, which uses patented cell signalling technology to regenerate hair regrowth and reverse greying hair.

#2 Myth: Hair loss or thinning hair only occurs in older women.

Fact: Not true! The causes of hair loss are many, and hormonal fluctuations, which occur at any age, is a huge one. Hair loss can also be hereditary, and occur prematurely due to factors like lifestyle choices or poor hair and scalp care habits. Even if you are not going through hormonal upheavals or stuck with the hair loss gene, temporary or seasonal hair loss can still occur because of triggers like over-exposure to hair chemicals, constantly wearing your hair in tight braids or ponytails, or the use of products with harmful additives.

Treatment: Be vigilant about excessive hairfall and take action right away. Choose specialised high-quality anti-hairfall products, and seek expert help immediately if the problem worsens. This is true even if your hair loss is hereditary – genetic hair loss can’t be cured but it can certainly be managed and possibly delayed.

#3 Myth: You don’t have to do anything for postpartum hair loss. Your hair will grow back after a few months.

Fact: Partially true, if you’re one of the lucky ones! Postpartum hair loss is typically temporary, and many new mums experience dramatic hair loss at around three months postpartum. As if the lack of sleep from taking care of a new infant isn’t stressful enough, you now have to contend with receding hairlines, bald patches and an increasingly visible part.

Most women return to their usual hair growth cycle between six and 12 months after birth. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for women to experience postpartum hair loss that’s greater than the norm, or to find that your hair still has yet to grow back one year after the birth of your baby.

Treatment: Enjoy your glorious pregnancy locks, but start taking care of your scalp even before postpartum hair loss sets in. Implementing a proper daily haircare regime before you get busy with your new baby goes a long way in ensuring that you can bounce back to a healthy hair growth cycle when the time comes.

PHS HAIRSCIENCE’s FEM Fortify range is a big favourite with mummies who want to prevent drastic hair loss, and ensure that hair grows back beautifully. For those with severe postpartum hair loss, MIRACLE STEM CELL SOLUTION is an effective hair regrowth treatment suitable for breastfeeding mums.

#4 Myth: Genetic hair loss is passed down through your mother’s side of the family.

Fact: Probably coined by a man. Male or female pattern hair loss can be inherited from either one of your parents. So don’t go blaming your mother for that!

Treatment: You can’t stop hereditary hair loss, but you sure can manage and even delay it. To manage genetic hair loss and thinning, try the proven MIRACLE STEM CELL SOLUTION, which is available in 5 variants to take care of different types and stages of hair loss.

#5 Myth: Washing your hair too much can cause hair loss.

Fact: Not true! How frequently you wash your hair has no bearing on overall hair loss nor growth of hair. You just notice it more in the shower, because of the strands that gather on the drain or that come out in your hands. The truth is, this is hair that would have fallen out anyway.

A healthy amount of hair loss (50-100 strands a day) is part of the hair regeneration cycle. Balding occurs when the hair no longer grows back, due to reasons like hair follicles dying off.

Treatment: Keeping your scalp clean and free of follicle-clogging impurities is paramount if you want to control or prevent hair loss. This is especially important in Singapore’s hot, humid climate. Incorporate simple rituals like weekly exfoliation, double cleansing or regular scalp treatments into your haircare regime to improve scalp health and support healthy hair growth.

#6 Myth: Getting regular trims will help your hair grow back faster and thicker.

Fact: We wish this was true! While frequent hair trims are extremely important for keeping split ends at bay and maintaining hair health, hair cuts do not help your hair grow faster or better.

Treatment: If your hair loss is mild, what you can ask for from your hairstylist is a flattering cut that helps to conceal the thinning hair and patchiness. For instance, a shorter hairstyle with layers can appear fuller and more voluminous than long, flat hair.
