Your Guide to Ageing, Thinning Hair: 5 Simple Tips

Ageing is a natural biological process that happens to everyone. It brings about many changes and two of the more undesirable ones include hair loss and thinning hair. As we age, the quality and volume of our hair starts to look and feel very different than from our younger days. The hairs produced can be brittle, more prone to breakage and much finer, until, eventually, the follicle may even stop producing new hairs. 🙁

The good news is that there are steps we can take to delay and even offset the effects of these natural changes! Here are 5 tips on how we can love on our hair to give them life and volume again.

    1. Invest in good shampoos that strengthens and improves scalp health

Ageing hair is less resilient and needs to be treated with care. Invest in shampoos and hair care products that contain natural ingredients with no harsh and harmful chemicals such as parabens and phthalates, which have been found to be hormone-disruptive.

PHS HAIRSCIENCE FEM Thickening Shampoo is an excellent choice for severe hair loss and thinning hair. It helps to stimulate hair growth while invigorating and densifying new hair follicles as they grow — giving your hair weight and volume! It also improves the scalp’s ability to defend itself against oxidative stress and protects against hair fall.

Formulated through rigorous scientific research, the FEM Thickening Shampoo contains Botanical 20 Complex that helps to maximise nutrient absorption in the scalp, thus allowing the 6 Vegetal Complex to promote hair growth and strengthen the scalp effectively. The 17 Amino Acids in the shampoo also helps to strengthen the hair follicles to support healthy hair growth and strengthen the hair strands.

If you have mild hair loss and thin hair or you would just like to prevent and delay the effects of hair thinning, PHS HAIRSCIENCE FEM Fortify Shampoo does the job wonderfully. This is a preventive shampoo that provides the scalp around the hair follicles with essential nutrients and optimal health to increase visible hair density and counter the appearance of thinning hair.

    2. Refrain from using heat styling products

If you are already experiencing hair loss and sporting thin hair, it is wise to refrain from using heat styling products, such as hair straighteners or curling wands, that will add further damage to your already weak hair. Air dry your hair instead of blow dry whenever possible. However, if styling is a must, apply a heat protectant to your hair prior. The heat protectant acts as a protective coating between your hair and the product hence reducing heat damage to your locks. It also helps to moisturise your locks to prevent further damage during heat styling.

    3. Moisturising is really important

We cannot emphasise that enough. Always condition your hair after shampoo to restore your hair’s sheen and natural oils lost during shampooing. Work the conditioner from the ends of your hair upwards but take care not to let it touch your scalp.

Applying a leave-in hair oil such as ADV Argan Oil also helps to boost your hair moisture and give it shine and prevent frizz.

    4. Eat a balanced protein-rich diet

The adage “you are what you eat,” is true when it comes to sporting a crown of healthy hair. Our hair strands are mainly protein strands so it is important that you do not skip this nutrient in your diet. Consider eating a bit of red meat a couple of times a week for the protein, folate, and iron to prevent hair loss. Healthy hair also requires these nutrients:

    • Vitamin A (spinach, green leafy veggies, carrots)
    • Vitamin C (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, oranges)
    • Biotin (eggs)
    • Omega-3 (salmon, avocado)
    • Vitamin E (avocado)

    5. Check in with a doctor or dermatologist

Excessive hair loss or thinning hair could also be a symptom for certain underlying health conditions that result in hormonal changes in the body. Check in with a doctor or do a full body checkup for a peace of mind. If you have specific symptoms such as a bald spot or itchiness, you can also check in with a dermatologist or speak to any of our PHS HAIRSCIENCE haircare experts to get a free scalp diagnosis. When it comes to hair loss, prevention is key to maintaining your crowning glory!
